Three representatives of the GNGS attended and spoke at the 2023 National Convention of the Sociedad Geológica Mexicana in Mexico City from April 23-27, 2023. GPI President Greg Wessel gave a keynote address that provided an overview and history of the GNGS and included presentations by Etzy Góngora and Beth Norman on aspects of the work GNGS is doing in education, responsible mining, and community geoscience. He invited those in the audience to partner with GPI/GNGS and help us nudge society toward the 22nd century. In addition, Etzy gave a separate presentation in a subsequent technical session on The Rock Cycle and the Circular Economy as a Model for Mine Waste Management, and Greg followed her talk with a presentation on the way GPI/GNGS approaches the issue of responsible exploration and mining, and how to bring the mining industry closer to being sustainable.

We also were able to meet the Director and management of the Servicio Geológico Mexicano (the national geological survey) and the President and other officers of the Sociedad Geológica Mexicana. We shared ideas and discussed briefly with the Sociedad President, Dr. Ricardo Barragán, a potential joint project that could advance geoscience education in a significant way. It was an interesting and productive meeting, and we made a number of good contacts for future cooperation.
